HFS Hot Vendor Fireside Chat with SimSpace
As organizations race to embrace the cloud and empower remote workers, IT and security teams are caught between enabling business while also ensuring the highest level of security. It’s a difficult balance, for sure. The attack surfaces are ever sprawling, and looser deployment paradigms can often expose more vulnerabilities to an organization's networks and data.
Luckily, it’s never been easier for security teams to gain confidence in their rollout of new technologies, by first validating them on a cyber range platform. They can test against known vulnerabilities, tune security settings appropriately and ensure that business doesn’t slow down for want a secure infrastructure.
In January, HFS Research selected SimSpace as the first cybersecurity vendor included in their OneOffice™ vision because of our ability to support and strengthen company technology and readiness goals.
Our own David Berliner recently sat down for a Fireside Chat with Ralph Aboujaoude Diaz, HFS Research Practice Leader to discuss HFS’s research into the challenges organization are facing today; the opportunities that cyber range technologies provide; and how to practice of continuous improvement around a cybersecurity team’s people, processes, and technologies.
A few key takeaways:
Security incidents continue to grow in volume and impact. While there are a lot of factors that contribute to this, from global politics to changes in technology, a big factor is the difficulty of approaching IT initiatives with a “security by design” approach. According to HFS Research’s Cybersecurity Pulse (October 2021), 47% of cybersecurity executives noted “New IT initiatives implemented without proper cybersecurity oversight and controls” as one of the biggest factors contributing to security events in their organization.
Cyber ranges are uniquely positioned to address the technological and human challenges. When exploring a new IT project, a cyber range gives a team the ability to model the new architecture or technology in a context with simulated user activity and realistic attacks, allowing convenient visibility into the risks and opportunities coming from the project. That convenience is key - it lowers the barrier to including cybersecurity into the earlier stages of an effort and can be then used throughout to allow an iterative path to improved security.
Cyber ranges offer an ideal setting to experience cybersecurity incidents relevant for the organization’s threat landscape. Either through live-fire events or simulated attacks, security teams can gain valuable insights into areas for growth while encouraging cross-functional collaboration and greater confidence in the team’s readiness.
This holistic ability to weave cyber readiness into business efforts through a cyber range is key to supporting the broader goals of the OneOffice™ vision. You can read more about the HFS OneOffice™ vision and how SimSpace’s cyber range capabilities fit into that framework, in the HFS OneOffice Hot Vendors report: Q4 2021.
