Security incidents continue to grow in volume and impact. While there are a lot of factors that contribute to this, from global politics to changes in technology, a big factor is the difficulty of approaching IT initiatives with a “security by design” approach. According to HFS Research’s Cybersecurity Pulse (October 2021), 47% of cybersecurity executives noted “New IT initiatives implemented without proper cybersecurity oversight and controls” as one of the biggest factors contributing to security events in their organization.
Cyber ranges are uniquely positioned to address the technological and human challenges. When exploring a new IT project, a cyber range gives a team the ability to model the new architecture or technology in a context with simulated user activity and realistic attacks, allowing convenient visibility into the risks and opportunities coming from the project. That convenience is key - it lowers the barrier to including cybersecurity into the earlier stages of an effort and can be then used throughout to allow an iterative path to improved security.
Cyber ranges offer an ideal setting to experience cybersecurity incidents relevant for the organization’s threat landscape. Either through live-fire events or simulated attacks, security teams can gain valuable insights into areas for growth while encouraging cross-functional collaboration and greater confidence in the team’s readiness.
